Literacy Math
Students will begin to learn about the components of fiction texts. Fiction texts have settings, characters, problems and solutions. Students will retell stories using story maps. As the unit continues, students will learn about character traits and how characters change in a story.
Students are practicing test taking skills. The first step is to read the questions. Then they read the passage or text. Next they read the question and then return to the passage. The students find and underline the answer in the text. Then students eliminate answers and choose the best answer. The following skills will be assessed and are practiced weekly using non-fiction passages: Students will focus on non-fiction text. They will identify text features in a text (table of contents, headings, subheadings, captions, diagrams, glossary and index). Students will identify facts and opinions in texts. They will also identify the main idea and details in non-fiction texts. Students will create headings for paragraphs by using the main idea. Students learned to use context clues in order to help them identify the meanings of unfamiliar words. They used definition clues (the word's meaning is explained in the sentence) and synonym clues (other words are used in the sentence that have the same meaning) in order to understand unfamiliar words. They also used a thesaurus to find synonyms. Please sign and return assessments that are sent home.
